81-year-old Slidell Man Gets 35 Years in Prison For Sexual Assault of Young Girl Caught on Video
July 28, 2025
District Attorney Collin Sims reports that on July 8, 2025, Judge Tara Zeller sentenced 81-year-old Richard James Nyberg of Slidell to 35 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of sexual battery of a child and indecent behavior with a juvenile. Assistant District Attorneys Gary Tromblay and Iain Dover prosecuted the case and Detective Matthew Bauer with the Slidell Police Department led the investigation.
Nyberg was caught on video sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl while the girl was asleep. The girl, along with her grandmother, had been temporarily sharing a Slidell residence with Nyberg. The grandmother had grown suspicious of Nyberg’s behavior around the child so she set up a concealed camera and pointed it at the girl’s bed. On the morning of August 1, 2024, the grandmother reviewed the video footage from the previous night and saw that it had recorded Nyberg sexually assaulting the girl. The grandmother immediately called 911 and Slidell Police Department officers were dispatched to the residence. When officers arrived at the residence, the victim’s grandmother explained what had happened and provided the video to the officers. After confirming the video showed Nyberg sexually abusing the child, officers arrested Nyberg. As he was being arrested, Nyberg told the child’s grandmother that she would regret having him arrested.
